Our therapists assist in the development of support groups and lead therapy groups dealing with specific topics. Employee Assistance Program VCA is an employment assistant provider for various companies in the Chattahoochee Valley area. Check with your HR/Benefits department for specific coverage.AREAS OF SERVICEMarriage/Family Issues This area involves working with natural families, blended families, single parent families, adoptive families and divorce within the family. Our treatment methodologies include: Systems Theory and Solution Focused Theory, in addition to the work done by David and Vera Mace. We also offer pre-marital counseling to assist couples in getting a right start to their life together. Child/Adolescent Disorders ADHD, Conduct Disorder, Attachment Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Separation Difficulties and Bullying are some of the commonly seen disorders in children and adolescents. Following the work of Dr. Scott Sells, we address the issues of: improving structure, supervision and nurturing with the main emphasis on development of a consistent method of working with each child. This includes: the creation of rules and consequences, parental involvement in all aspects of each child’s life, seeking opportunities to praise, compliment, and encourage the child combined with planned rewards for positive accomplishments. We also work with adults who are living with ADHD and other disorders in a similar manner. Parenting Education Anyone can become a parent. There are no prescribed requirements other than the ability to procreate. It is up to each person to create, nurture, and love their child. Society assumes that people know how to parent and stands in shock when the news of abuse or death at the hands of a parent is heard on the TV. Most parents do the best they know how. But each is the product of their own history and personality. In most cases, parents of today will parent much the same as their parents did. This seminar is designed to help good parents become even better. It can be adapted for churches, PTAs, other organizations or the court system. Divorcing Parents Divorce is never easy. Many people feel there are no victims of a divorce. When children are involved, there are victims and the children are those victims. VCA offers a 3 1/2 hour seminar for divorcing parents. This seminar is designed to help parents who are going though a divorce be better equipped to parent their children. We incorporate video, role playing, group interaction and feedback to help parents better handle their own pain as well as the pain and loss felt by their child. Crisis Debriefing With more than 18 years of experience in responding to various emergency situations, we stand ready to assist the surrounding communities with immediate response to a crisis situation. Anger Management Anger is perhaps, the most common emotional experience that human beings share. Marriages and families are often broken apart because of anger. Jobs are lost. Friendships are destroyed. Lives are changed. In the legal system, it is reported that many of the cases in the courts of today are there because of anger. Learning to manage and to live with one’s anger is not easy. In order to overcome and learn to manage any harmful behavior, a person must first understand it. In our anger management groups, we help each participant learn what anger is; what pushes their buttons; and how their current method of expressing their anger affects their life and the lives of others. We help each participant learn to express their anger in more appropriate ways. This is done by a hands on process and by group or peer experience. The overall course is designed to last a total of 24 hours, which can be offered through a twelve or 24 week plan. Domestic Violence There are many types of domestic violence, but the most common is spousal battering and child abuse. Abuse of the elderly is also high on the list. Domestic violence includes but is not limited to physical battering, sexual abuse and psychological battering. Battering is a pattern of behavior used to establish power and control over another person through fear and intimidation by persons who feel they have a right to control another. It often includes threat or use of violence and escalates over time. VCA offers personal counseling as well as a seminar on domestic violence to help families understand and overcome the affects such behaviors have on their lives. Mediation We stand ready to assist in any dispute resolution within a business, neighborhood, or family. Our therapists are trained in civil, domestic (including divorce) and Juvenile mediation. Court Related Services The therapist of Valley Counseling Associates, have worked with court systems in Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee. In addition, we are called on to help mediate healthy, non-adversarial agreements which are in the best interest of children.
